East Morton residents are celebrating the official launch of the East Morton Community shop. Councillor Doreen Lee, Lord Mayor of Bradford, attended the launch event to formally open the shop.

Richard Tassell, member of the East Morton Community Shop committee, said:

“A small group of us started to think about converting the old toilet block four years ago. We circulated a questionnaire at the gala that year and then held our first public meeting on 23rd January 2016. At that meeting we had a presentation from Clapham Community Shop.”

In the early stages of 2016, Plunkett provided adviser action planning support, funded by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, and mentoring support funded by The Prince’s Countryside Fund. Later, the group went on to successfully secure a further eight days of Plunkett support through the Bright Ideas programme.

Richard went on to say: “We formed our committee the following month and then began to plan a fund raising strategy. We started to apply to grant funders that year and also launched our community share offer in October. We did negotiate quite a few highs and lows before opening our doors to start trading on the 15th April this year.”

“It was always the vision of Dr Carolyn Williams who was on our committee until her sad death last December, that the shop should not only be a shop but also a social hub.  There is every evidence that this is happening, people come and spend the time of day have a tea or coffee and sample our range of local produce.”
