Plunkett is excited to announce that The Beeston Ploughshare is kindly hosting a More than a Pub Study Visit for us! Have a look at their website, they are a true community hub!

Beeston Community Enterprises Limited & The Beeston Ploughshare:

After several years of campaigning and months of hard work, this Norfolk village finally manged to save The Beeston Ploughshare, and brought it back to life for the community to enjoy.

Having closed in January 2016, the pub was at risk of being sold to a housing developer and being turned into two flats with three houses on its car park. A determined group of villagers set about purchasing the pub and running it for the benefit of the surrounding area.

Beeston Community Enterprises Limited was formed, and members of the public were given an opportunity to buy shares. Following a tireless community-driven campaign, they bought the pub on 31 January 2019, carried out the extensive repairs and refurbishment needed to enable the pub to finally re-open and resume its role as a vital community hub.

They succeeded in opening the Ploughshare on a drinks-only basis on 24 May 2019, followed by its fantastic restaurant. We are all delighted the pub is now also operating a café and most recently opened an ‘essentials’ shop all as part of its vibrant community hub – welcoming locals, clubs and visitors all whilst sourcing food from local suppliers where possible, boosting the local economy, providing jobs and volunteering opportunities and reducing social isolation.

Come and hear how they came together as a community-owned business, raised community financing, secured grant funding, and saved their historic pub.

The Event and Timings:

The agenda will be suitable for early stage community pub groups and community hubs and will include networking opportunities throughout the day:

  • 10.30am Arrival and Coffee
  • 10.50am Welcome and Introduction from Phil Harriss, Plunkett Adviser
  • 11.00am Presentation from Beeston Community Enterprises Limited
  • 12 Noon Tour of The Ploughshare hub (including the community café and shop)
  • 12.30pm Campaign summaries from the group
  • 1pm Lunch with Q&A Session 2.20pm Wrap-up and further information
  • 2.30pm Finish

A limited number of travel bursaries of up to £120 per community group are available – please enquire **PRIOR** to the event to access this arrangement.

The More than a Pub Programme:

The More than a Pub programme is funded by Power to Change, and led by the Plunkett Foundation in collaboration with Pub is the Hub, CAMRA, British Beer & Pub Association, Locality, CMS, KeyFund, Co-operative and Community Finance and MHCLG. The programme is able to offer support to communities in urban and rural localities across England to help them save their local pub through community ownership. Under the programme groups are able to access:

  • Funded business support with our advisers
  • Bursaries
  • Networking events
  • Loan and grant finance
  • Study visits
