Formerly Plunkett’s Project Support Officer, George writes about how he will work closely with colleagues, community-owned businesses, and external partners to promote and embed Plunkett’s core values and strategic objectives.
After two years of working as Plunkett UK’s Project Support Officer, I have the honour of becoming our first Impact Officer. The role was created to help focus on what really matters to Plunkett and how we might share those values with both the groups we support and external partners.
Through years of involvement with community-owned businesses, Plunkett understands the need to safeguard and build on access to a wide range of goods and services. This has the added bonus of helping the local economy to grow while at the same time creating opportunities for employment, volunteering and training.
That idea of safeguarding extends not just to our environment and the need to tackle climate change but to equity diversity, and inclusion too. We want each business we support to be a welcoming and safe space for all.
These subjects are all close to my heart. As someone who lives with a disability in a rural community, I have seen first-hand the power of people working together for the benefit of everyone. As a volunteer, I have run the local parent and toddler group, coached youth football, and I am now a trustee of our small local museum.
All of these ventures improve the lives of others and show me that we are better when we work together. To have the opportunity to support similar ideas as a career is a dream come true. We should all be striving to leave the world in a better place for those coming after us and the values Plunkett shares are a positive foot forward towards those goals.
