An end of year message of thanks to our members, partners and supporters from our CEO, James Alcock.
2023 has been another incredible year for Plunkett Foundation and the rural community business movement UK-wide.
Plunkett has seen and responded to a significant increase in enquiries – over 500 enquiries in total. In part, this reflects a growing number of existing businesses taking action against the challenging trading environment in an effort to survive and thrive. There is also a growing number of communities turning to the community ownership model for the first time, and as a means for improving the areas in which they live. Almost 30 new community owned businesses have started trading in rural areas this year – which is a remarkable achievement and testament to the relevance of this business model.
We couldn’t have carried on our service and reached more communities than ever without the support we receive from all our supporters – whether that be our grant funders, corporate partners, members and delivery associates. So, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of them for choosing to work with us, and continuing to back the rural community business sector. I would also like to thank our staff, our advisers and our Trustees for their continued dedication to what we do and working so well together.

Finally, I’m delighted to close the year with some good news – Plunkett’s membership has reached 600 – the highest level in our 104 year history! We always say we are stronger when working in partnership, and this is exactly what membership does – it unites us, gives us a collective voice, and establishes tangible benefits for all. Membership is open to everyone who believes in what we do – community businesses, corporate partners, local authorities, and individuals.
