A message from James Alcock, CEO of Plunkett UK in response to the riots happening across the nation.

The tragic events which occurred in Southport on 29 July were horrific, and our deepest sympathies go out to those families and the wider community who are mourning the tragic loss of life. What happened on that fateful day has however triggered a series of other events and actions which I now feel compelled to respond to.

The scenes of rioting, violence, looting and racism that have been seen nationwide are shocking and devastating for so many people. No one should live in fear and Plunkett wishes to add its voice to the growing network of other organisations condemning the actions of the few and express our solidarity with minoritised communities and individuals, or those feeling isolated and targeted at this time.

We know that the network of community-owned businesses, that we are so proud to work with are in a unique position to act. Because of their rootedness in, and connection with the places in which they operate, community businesses can and will offer support to those living locally who may feel under threat or unwelcome right now.

As businesses which promote inclusion and integration in local areas across the country, and as businesses that are owned by, run by and run for the benefit of their community we know that they will continue to be welcoming spaces for everyone. A message that we are always proud to champion – but perhaps more importantly at this time of civil unrest.

There can be no excuse for anyone inciting the levels of racism and hatred that have been seen. We know that community action will be a powerful resource to get through and beyond this troubling time.

The team at Plunkett and myself commit to always being there for the community business network and will do all we can to support you in helping your local community by creating safe spaces for all.

Be sure to get in touch with our team to see how we can help or if you just want to share your experiences of what is happening right now. We want you to know that you are not alone.
