Member of Parliament for Tatton, Esther McVey, was invited to a local community-owned business in Styal, Cheshire as it celebrated its 11th anniversary since opening
Earlams Community Store and Café is much more than a village café – it is owned and run by the village as community shareholders, and these volunteers’ dedication keeps it running for the benefit of Styal and the surrounding area.
The purpose of last week’s visit was to showcase the products and services, explain the economic and social benefits Earlams provides, and to meet the people behind the business who talked about the journey and transformation they have undergone over the last 11 years.
The business now includes a modern meeting space, art and craft gallery and children’s play area. In 2019, it was awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the highest award a voluntary group can receive in the UK.

Ms McVey said:
“There is something unique and special about Earlams, and it was an honour to be invited along. The store and café provide so many different opportunities for people in Styal and the surrounding area and I enjoyed hearing about the excellent work being done.
“I wish Earlams every success as they continue to grow, and I look forward to hearing more of its success stories.”
John Novak, Chair of the Earlams Committee, said:
“Eleven years ago, we committed to setting up our community gallery, shop and café. It has been a very challenging but very rewarding journey. Over time we have evolved our offer in all three areas to better address all aspects of isolation in our wider community.
“We provide a range of community projects such as craft workshops, CPR training and talking groups as well as providing financial support to the village school and other developments across the village. All our volunteers contribute to delivering a high quality and welcoming environment that is enjoyed by our customers.”
David Lydiat, Plunkett UK’s Head of External Affairs, stated: “Earlams is a really impressive community-owned business run by local volunteers entirely for the benefit of the community. The impact of such a venture is significant, not just in economic terms, but socially for providing services, a place to enjoy and meet others, and something for all age groups.
“We were very pleased to welcome Esther McVey MP to visit such an important example of a rural community-owned business. Plunkett UK supports communities to form and take ownership of local assets for community use. Our Impact Report 2025 illustrates the life-changing impact this model offers across the country. To be successful, however, community groups need the support of government around the right to buy and in terms of grant funding.”
