We’re proud to celebrate Almondsbury and Appleton Community Shops, both recently honoured with The King’s Award for Voluntary Service – the highest national accolade awarded to volunteer-led groups across the UK.
At Plunkett, we know that volunteers are the driving force behind the success of community-owned businesses. People’s passion, commitment, and generosity are what make these businesses thrive.
According to our Impact Report, over 25,000 volunteers are involved in community businesses throughout the UK; participating in any way they can, helping to build confidence, skills, and employability. Ultimately, it gives people the opportunity to be a part of something and to feel valued.
That’s why we’re especially proud to see two of our members, Appleton and Almondsbury Community Shops recognised with the King’s Award for Voluntary Service. Often described as the voluntary sector’s equivalent of an MBE, it celebrates the exceptional contributions made by volunteers at the grassroots level.
To mark the occasion, both community groups held local celebrations and were invited to Buckingham Palace this summer to receive their awards; a fitting tribute to the incredible impact they’ve made in their communities.

A special presentation ceremony was held at Almondsbury Community Shop in May, where the team was formally recognised for their achievement. The award was presented by Edward Gillespie OBE, Lord-Lieutenant of Gloucestershire, on behalf of His Majesty the King, and he was joined by Deputy Lieutenants Susie Hewson-Lowe MBE DL and Caroline Penley DL.
Since opening in 2009, Almondsbury Community Shop has been entirely run by volunteers. Their commitment goes far beyond keeping the shop operational; they offer a warm welcome to everyone who walks through the door, creating a space that truly sits at the heart of the village. The award is a well-deserved recognition of the dedication, hard work, and community spirit shown by every volunteer involved.

Celebrations at Almondsbury
Appleton Community Shop, Oxfordshire
Recently celebrating its 25th anniversary, the shop continues to thrive thanks to the dedication of around 70 volunteers, ranging from 8 to 80 years old.
Volunteering at Appleton is inclusive and flexible, with roles tailored to suit individual abilities and interests. One example is an elderly gentleman who visits every fortnight simply to refill the bird feeders; a small task that gives him a sense of purpose and connection.
To honour the shop’s incredible contribution, a special ceremony was held where volunteers were formally presented with their award by Mrs Marjorie Glasgow BEM, Lord-Lieutenant of Oxfordshire. The event was a heartfelt celebration of the shop’s legacy and the volunteers who continue to make it a cornerstone of village life.

“At Plunkett, we are proud of the role rural community-owned businesses play in creating meaningful volunteering opportunities, especially in areas where such opportunities are often limited or in decline. Volunteering not only strengthens communities, but also empowers individuals by building confidence, developing skills, and enhancing employability.”
“Therefore, it’s fantastic to see our members, Appleton and Almondsbury Community Shops, recognised with the prestigious King’s Award for Voluntary Service. This honour is a testament to the dedication of their volunteers. Congratulations to all involved!”
Proud members of Plunkett UK
Through their Plunkett membership, both shops gain access to a wide range of resources, exclusive discounts, trusted suppliers, and much more.
Membership is at the heart of everything we do. The strength of our network – made up of community businesses, partners and supporters – is what enables us to champion community ownership and represent the interests of rural communities across the UK. Without our members, we couldn’t advocate effectively to the media, funders, policymakers, and other key stakeholders.
“As Plunkett members, we have the reassurance of knowing help is always available when we need it. Renewing our membership each year gives us a sense of being part of a wider movement that supports other community businesses like ours. We’re proud to be part of Plunkett and to contribute to growing the network of community businesses nationwide.”
